Remote Access to the Physics Department

For some reason it might be required to access the computers at the physics department while you aren't on site. For instance, if you need to run a software which is available on the department computers only or when you want to use a computer with more compute power than you have available at your current location. These services are naturally subject to the terms and conditions regarding the use of computer systems at the department.

The department hosts computers that are running Windows and Linux operating systems, with both offering the possibility to log in from a remote location.

On Windows computers, a service called Remote Desktop (also known as rdesktop) is provided which can be used from any computer running Windows, MacOS X or Linux and requires your user account to be granted for remote access which means you have to send us an email first. For detailed instructions on how to use Remote Desktop, from any remote computer, click the appropriate link in the list below.

Computers running Linux offers two distinct possibilities for remote access:

The first option is access through a text terminal using a service called Secure Shell (also known as ssh). This service allows to log in to any Linux computer at the department by

  • Connecting to a Windows computer using Remote Desktop
  • Connecting to a Linux computer using SSH (text-mode-only interface)
  • Connecting to a Linux computer using X2GO (full graphical interface)
